PicoCare. Pigmentation and melasma management.
ABOUT PICOCARE
Advanced layered technology for effective pigmentation and melasma with minimal downtime and long term results
As part of your customised, layered approach to treating your pigmentation and melasma, Dr. Shammi uses PicoCare with hyper-precision programming for efficacious results. This advanced treatment is performed by our trained clinicians under the guidance of Dr. Shammi. Unlike the Moxi laser, which relies on heat, PicoCare uses photoacoustic non-thermal energy to break pigmentation into microscopic particles that are naturally cleared through the body’s lymphatic system. This technology has been specifically designed to ensure minimal heat damage and downtime. Dr. Shammi carefully determines the settings for each client during the initial consultation, ensuring precision and safety, particularly when treating complex pigmentation or melasma.
PicoCare is often complemented with the Moxi laser to enhance pigment removal and overall results. It is also highly effective for age spots, which frequently coexist with melasma, making it a versatile tool in comprehensive skin rejuvenation and pigment management.
PICO TREATMENT
THE PROCESS
The Consultation
You will have an in-clinic consultation with Dr Shammi to assess your skin and determine suitability for Pico. This consultation is essential, as it is where your personalised treatment protocol is prescribed, including precise laser settings tailored to your specific pigmentation or melasma.
Melasma is a complex and reactive condition. Even if you have previously undergone Pico treatment elsewhere, we will only proceed once Dr Shammi has carefully assessed your skin and defined the appropriate parameters. Due to the sensitivity of melanocytes, Pico must be delivered with clinical precision to minimise the risk of rebound pigmentation or flare-ups.
The consultation also allows Dr Shammi to prescribe a supporting skincare regimen, which may include prescription-based or at-home care, to help regulate melanocyte activity and optimise treatment outcomes.
The consultation fee may be credited toward treatment, subject to terms and conditions.
The Treatment
Dr Shammi prescribes Pico as part of a structured treatment plan to address pigmentation and melasma with precision and control. In most cases, the treatment is performed as a focused session, with parameters tailored to the type, depth, and behaviour of pigment within the skin. The clinician follows Dr Shammi’s prescribed settings, including wavelength, energy delivery, and technique, to safely target pigment while minimising stimulation of melanocyte activity.
Given the reactive nature of melasma, Pico is delivered with a measured approach, prioritising controlled correction over aggressive clearance to reduce the risk of rebound pigmentation. Where appropriate, additional devices may be incorporated within the same session or broader treatment plan to enhance outcomes, support skin quality, and improve overall pigment regulation.
The treatment is generally well tolerated. Some redness, dryness, and visible peeling may occur, and the skin can appear temporarily uneven or disrupted for approximately 2–4 days following treatment.

FAQ
Q: What does Pico do for pigmentation and melasma?
A: Pico is a laser device that delivers ultra-short pulses of energy to target pigment within the skin. In the context of pigmentation and melasma, it works by fragmenting excess melanin into smaller particles, allowing the body to gradually clear it. Settings are carefully controlled to avoid overstimulating melanocytes, making it suitable for managing complex, reactive pigmentation when prescribed appropriately.
Q: Is a consultation required to begin treatment?
A: Yes. A consultation is required to assess your skin, confirm suitability, and prescribe a personalised treatment plan. The consultation fee may be credited toward treatment if you proceed, subject to terms and conditions.
Q: Will I require prescription skincare to address the source of my melasma?
A: Yes, in many cases. Melasma is managed through a two-pronged approach, targeting both the visible pigment and the underlying melanocyte activity. Dr Shammi may prescribe medical-grade or prescription skincare to regulate pigment production, alongside in-clinic treatments such as Pico.
Q: How soon will I see results?
A: Results vary depending on your baseline pigmentation, adherence to prescribed skincare, consistency with treatment, and diligent use of sun protection. Improvements are typically gradual, with progressive refinement over a series of sessions.
Q: Where is treatment available?
A: Pico treatments are currently available at DOCTOR SHAMMI Melbourne.
Q: Can I have my consultation via telehealth?
A: No. All Pico consultations must be conducted in person at DOCTOR SHAMMI Melbourne to allow for accurate clinical assessment.
Q: Do I need a referral?
A: A GP referral is only required if you wish to access a Medicare rebate for your consultation. It is not required for private consultations and does not impact treatment costs.
Q: Does private health insurance cover the consultation fee?
A: No. Consultation fees are not covered by private health insurance.
Q: If I proceed with treatment, can my consultation fee be used toward it?
A: Yes. The consultation fee may be credited toward your first Pico session if treatment is booked on the same day, subject to terms and conditions.
Q: Can the protocol be undertaken if I am pregnant, breastfeeding, or trying to conceive?
A: Treatment is generally considered appropriate while breastfeeding or trying to conceive, however it is not recommended during pregnancy.
